Hurricane Season is officially here! Preparedness is key - make sure you have the supplies you need to weather the storm.

What is a hurricane?

A hurricane is a tropical storm with sustained winds of 74 miles per hour. Storms with sustained winds less than 39 miles per hour are called Tropical Depressions and storms with winds exceeding 39 miles per hour are called Tropical Storms. Although Hurricane Season is defined as the period between June 1st and November 30th, hurricanes may occur before or after this time period. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administation (NOAA) outlines predictions for the 2021 season on their website. Newcomers to Florida may not be used to dealing with these storms and may be fearful. It is certainly wise to be aware so you can prepare your home in the event of a storm, and make plans to evacuate if necessary. Unless your home is near the coast, in most cases there is no cause to be concerned with a storm surge. A storm surge is defined as an abnormal surge of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tide. No matter where your home is located, it could be in the path of a storm so being prepared is simply part of living in Florida.

Building to withstand storms

All Holiday Builders new homes are built to meet the requirements of the State of Florida's Building Codes. These codes are among the strictest in the nation. The codes were updated substaintially following Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The Florida Building Code Commission established in the late 1990's, mandated a single, statewide building code that featured tough standards to ensure structures would withstand major hurricane-level winds. Each Holiday Builders home is built with hurricane-resistant engineered wood trusses and come with storm panels for all glass openings where required by code. These panels make securing your home easy before a storm. Hurricane storm panels help to protect your windows from flying objects like tree limbs or other debris. Prior to any storm, you want to secure all outdoor furniture, trash cans, yard ornaments or any lose items you have outside, by bringing it all inside. High winds can pick up large objects and throw them about causing unnecessary damage.

Hurricane supplies are TAX Free now through June 6th

Preparation for the storm is key in managing hurricanes. Your home may not sustain any damage, but you could lose power for an undeterminable amount of time. It's a good idea to start stocking up on supplies now. This is also a cost saving measure so you're not out at the last minute, panic shopping before a storm.

If you're without power, you'll need batteries to power flashlights. You may want to have a propane or charcoal grill for cooking or a camping stove. You'll want to have a sturdy cooler for your refrigerated items. You also want to have a very healthy supply of drinking water on hand. It's always a good idea to fill up a bathtub with water so you have enough water for flushing toilets. Also, make sure you have canned goods - food that will keep if not refrigerated because there's a chance you may not have access to ice.

Tax free shopping days for hurricane supplies in Florida is slated for May 28th through June 6th. The state of Florida provides storm information and a list of items you need to complete your hurricane kit on their website.  You can find the hurricane supply list here.

Always remember to heed the warnings of local emergency officials. If you're told to evacuate, be sure to do so in a timely manner to avoid crowded highways and booked hotel rooms.
